Linda was one visitor who took the time to leave a detailed comment outlining the dental work she had done abroad. I reached out to her to hear more about her experience and she was kind enough to answer a number of questions in order to help people (like you!) figure out if traveling to India is a realistic approach to getting implants.

A resident of Australia, she traveled to Mumbai, India to get her implants and ended up doing a bit of sightseeing while she was there. This is what’s known as “dental tourism”. Here is more information about what dentist she went to, how much it cost and what she did when she was there:

Who was your Dentist?

First off, people would like to know the name of the dentist and/or clinic who did the work since you researched them for 4 years and had such a positive experience in terms of quality, cost and pain.

The name of the dentist was Dentzz dental. They have, I think 3 practices in India. I went to the one in Mumbai.

Please tell us a bit about your experience.

Just returned from India a week ago. I had 13 implants, 5 extractions, 8 root canals, bone grafts, sinus lift and wire welded to some teeth and 24 crowns. Also numerous consultation check-ups and X-rays. I chose the most expensive implants and crowns and the total cost was just over Australian $17000. Everything was completed in 2 1/2 weeks and I don’t have to return. The treatment was painless, just a few ulcers and a sore mouth. I didn’t even know they had given me bone grafts or stitches. The teeth look great and I had a wonderful experience. Everyone said why are you going to India but I researched the dentist for 4 years and concluded that they are performing these procedures continually and they were probably more experienced than some others.

They have specialists in each field. The first day was my consultation and X-rays. The second day was root canals to my good teeth performed by a specialist that only does this. The third day I had extractions, implants and bone grafts by a specialised implantologist. I might add that after the injections I did not feel a thing. I was not aware I had bone grafts and stitches. They use this wonderful spray called nummit to freeze the area where they inject. Also included in the price were mouth guards that they suggest you wear at night I case you grind your teeth. I might add that a root canal there takes about 15 minutes not spread over about 3 visits as in Australia.
There is also a cosmetic dentist working there.

Why did you choose Dentzz?

They were all very professional and I chose them because I felt that they would be more expert than here because of the amount of implants they place all the time.

The surgery was full of people from all over the world and they all seemed to be happy with their results. I wanted mine done in 2 weeks as I did not want to go there a second time which some of them do.

I suggest you contact Dentzz, Rujuta will give you a quote.

How much did everything cost?

The total was just over Australian $17000.

13 implants at $400 each, there are cheaper brands $250 each
8 root canals
5 extractions
Bone grafts and sinus lifts

Other international patients that were there had been quoted Australian $120,000 [for the same work]. Australia is terribly expensive for dental work, a root canal can cost up to $1800.

I had 13 implants at $400 each which came to less than 1 implant in Australia for which I was quoted $6000. By the way I picked the more expensive implants. The normal ones only cost $250 each!!!! I also picked the most expensive crowns.

This dentist was the cheapest I could find in the world. They also provide accommodation if your cost is over a certain amount. I had 2 weeks accommodation free which was pretty basic but only 5 minute walk to the surgery.

I was given a choice of two hotels to stay in. I opted for the one which was 5 minutes’ walk to the dentist. This was pretty basic. The other one looked better but was 30 minutes by taxi away. Had I known taxis were so cheap I might have considered the other one but as I went in my own at 70 years old I wanted to be near the dentist in case I had any problems.

You said that accommodation was free. What other costs were involved? (Airfare, food, etc?)

The airfare cost me $1200 with Qantas including a stopover in Singapore (not including hotel). I spent $500 in 3 weeks away including food and sightseeing and presents.

The accomodation was for 2 weeks. I paid the rest myself about $200.

Why did you choose dental implants over the alternatives (dentures, bridges, etc.)?
I have tried dentures but could not stand the plate in the roof of my mouth.

With all that work done, how long did the discomfort (soreness, ulcers, etc.) last after the procedure?
Because I had a lot of injections, my gums were sore, but not where they put the implants.
I had a few ulcers in my mouth which were uncomfortable a little bit to eat with so I mainly ate soft food.

It was nearly two weeks later that I had the bridge placed in my mouth so they wait a while for it to heal. During this time you don’t look very attractive! I was expecting individual implants but with crooked teeth to make them look perfect. (And they are) and for strength they do it this way. At the end after many fittings they ask you to wear the teeth for a day to see if they’re comfortable then the next day they are stuck in permanently. I would say that you visit them nearly every other day to check the progress.

Did you manage to include some tourism?

Many people are attracted to the combination of dental work and a vacation. What did you do in your spare time in Mumbai?

Mumbai is a dirty city, quite a cultural shock but then I have been to Bali a few times so I was half prepared. Lots of poverty and begging. It is very cheap to eat there a meal for $2 to $3 Taxis are everywhere!!!!!! Thousand of them and you can travel for about half an hour for around $2 to $3.

While I was there I took advantage of this and hired a driver for the day and visited the Gateway of India, From there you can catch a ferry to Elephanta Island, climb 120 steps to a cave which is 1400 years old and cut out of a rock with statues of the gods inside. Quite enjoyed that after I got my breath back! I also visited Ghandi’s house which was very interesting. Also the Hanging gardens and the Taj hotel and of course plenty of markets. Ate a lot at a fabulous vegetarian restaurant just on the corner by the dentist.

Anything else you would like to add?

Since your first email I got a call from Dentzz to see if I would be interested in being an agent for them over here but nothing has eventuated yet. I feel that had I had someone to telephone to talk to them in Australia before I went over there it would have been a plus. Also to see someone who had had the treatment. I’ll let you know what eventuates.

All I can say is that I feel it’s the best thing I’ve ever done and now a lot of my friends want to go.
Any other questions I’ll be happy to answer. I also made friends with a lot of the patients from around the world. It was a great experience if you go with a positive attitude.

Do your research and have a holiday at the same time.

I would like to thank Linda for taking the time to answer the questions I sent her. If you have a question about her experiences, please leave a comment below!

What others are saying

  1. I HAVE NO TEETH. FULL UPPER AND LOWER DENTURES. I AM THINKING OF A FULL UPPER AND LOWER SET OF IMPLANTS. SYDNEY QUOTE IS $40,000.0 FOR 2 SETS OF 4 ON ONE IMPLANTS. WOULD I DO BETTER IN INDIA. I HEAR THEIR SUPERIOR CLINICS ARE EXCELLENT

  2. PS: Do not shop around for price. The good clinics charge more- just like they do here. I promise you if you go to the cheapest place in India- you will be in for an incredibly abrupt unpleasant surprise. Some of these clinics are horrendous. So —FIND THE BEST DENTIST- NOT THE BEST PRICE.

They are cheaper than here- (US). Also where you really save money is on crowns and on extra unplanned work- root canals, sinus lift surgery, extractions. You can literally spend thousands on that in the US- and get all of it done in India for a couple hundred (all of it). SO- where implants might be 600$- and you say “I saw them advertised here (in US) for 600”—they don’t include the abutment- they will charge you 400$ and they will charge you 100$-300 for cone beam and pano xrays all of which is 10-20$ in india. Second- abutments are free (usually)- and US doctors charge outrageous prices for them. They advertise cheap implants and there are many hidden costs. Also, in India many times the price of the implant includes the crown- so make sure you compare apples and apples.

Be very careful. ASK me if you have quesitons- I will direct you to the right places.

    • Hi, can you please tell me the name and location of the dental clinic you attended. I need extensive work done including implants, bone graft, and bridges. I would appreciate any guidance you can provide

  3. If you go to the place with the best website- you can expect to get nothing. You need to do RESEARCH—that is- call, talk to others, read various websites- write emails, ask questions questions questions and you will quickly find those dental clinics who are honest- and know what they are doing, and those that don’t. If you find someone who is impatient about answering questions, rude, or feels like you are bothering them- the relation ship is at its very best and if you think they are going to treat you better when you are sitting in their chair – cash in hand- you are in for a (well just read the above comments).

I had extensive implants and work done in India- but I did a ton of research. Of the literally hundreds of dentists I talked to, I found maybe 3 or 4 that I would have gone to. The place I ultimately selected – there were no surprises- and my teeth are great. So- do not —-DO NOT—read websites. You are seeing what they want you to see. Ask them for pictures and for US referrals. DO NOT GET INDIAN REFERRALS- they mean absolutely nothing- because you have no idea who they are- it could be the dentists girlfriend or wife- or you might talk to both of them if you get 2 references. So get US people (if in the US, UK people if in the UK, Australian if in Australia- you get the idea).

I will only say this- I have seen so many negative comments about some of these clinics- and yet people continue to go to them and continue to get ripped off. I just dont get it. I know that one in particular (mentioned in this website) sends a nice booklet and promises the world, but I have yet to see satisfied patients—and after one year- they are furious- because it all had to be redone. So be very very careful.

  4. I agree with Maurice Russell and his experience in some ways, not all. In India, there is no professionalism or responsibility because the judicial system is weak. People will lie, anybody will lie or exaggerate or cancel. That is the way they operate. This sort of work takes time and many visits to the dental expert if it is implants, extraction, gum analysis and treatment etc. You just cannot get your hum treated by any dentist.

Secondly, why would somebody from USA go to a place which is crowded with patients and the the place disorganized?. You need to first get examined in your own country before you venture out to confirm what needs done. Thirdly, how can so many procedures be done in a couple of weeks when it takes time for each procedure to be done, to heal, to be inspected or reviewed for adjustments, and most of all to examine for post-operative infection. Just because they say they can do it all in 2 weeks does not mean you should. Remember, they are a business and their main goal is to make money. They are not going to get sued if somebody is dissatisfied or if something went wrong. There are many reputed places in India which may cost more but worth the research and reviews.

One field that they clearly lack and have no clue about is patient and hospital/clinic administration. It is a subject by itself and no amount of the best doctors and nurses or dental hygienists can equate that. Hospital administration needs proper experienced personnel who know
    1. How the clinic is run,
    2. How patients are booked and evaluated before treatment starts.
    3. Whether the patient has been educated about what work needs done.
    4. What are the risks involved and what procedures will be performed on what teeth.
    5. The time needed for each procedure and follow-up
    6. The costs for each procedure
    7. Which doctors will be working on you for what procedure.
    8. Who will do follow-up visit inspections and so on.
    9. What happens when a visit is canceled for no apparent reason?.
    10. Who compensates for a canceled visit and how do the other subsequent visits get carried on or rescheduled.

So, just going to India without proper planning, research and confirmation in writing is just a waste of time. One cannot blame the place or the authorities for something that they have no control over. And please, don’t go for some thing and start bad mouthing the place about other things. Remember, the country did not invite you there and you chose to go there on your own free will. It is not a developed nation that caters to the needs of foreigners personally. Nobody knows to say NO there. If you walk on the road and tried to find your way to a place, virtually everybody and anybody you ask will point you in some direction with his finger in the air. It’s so ridiculous because thy want to help even when they don’t have a clue about where you want to go. And I am from India who spent half my life there.

  5. I went to India for dental treatment, the dentist used was DENTZZ.

Was I satisfied, defiantly not, I was treated like a village idiot, constantly lied too, had multiple appointments cancelled, as moved to another day, now consider the distance I travelled, after
giving over a months notice when I would arrive, confirming arrival at least 3 times to find I could not be attended to, so I hang around their surgery all day waiting, as if I have other things to do, hotel offered was not cheap and very low quality, but I accepted I was in Mumbai, in 2 weeks I was not able to find a half decent restaurant, again to be accepted. Mumbai would have to be the worst city in the worst country I have ever visited, I went walking one day, about a mile from my hotel and completely lost, I could not find a taxi that could take me back. I feel that these people do not understand the term ‘tell the truth’ All my top teeth were removed after telling me 6 had to be extracted, 5 implants fitted, 1 got infected and had to be removed and one fell out, an example of shoddy workmanship. Will I ever go back to this company, what do you expect. Only good point was at the end I refused to pay the last payment, did they ever follow up to try and pacific me, of course not. DENTZZ is a cheap production company and all they attempt to do is turn over as many people as they can without giving satisfaction., AT least 3 other patients I meet tat were waiting complained to me about shoddy work, my suggestion is if you need dental work, go to another dentist, all cannot be this bad.
